KBOCC, NMU Sign New Articulation Agreements

KBOCC, NMU Sign New Articulation Agreements

KBOCC, NMU Sign New Articulation AgreementsKeweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College (KBOCC) and Northern Michigan University (NMU) have signed two articulation agreements this past week, streamlining the transfer of credits between the institutions. This partnership creates a simplified pathway between KBOCC’s Associate of Science and NMU’s Bachelor of Science degrees in two programs: Psychology and Environmental Science. An articulation agreement is built on the philosophy that students who choose to transfer from a community college to a university to earn a bachelor’s degree should be provided with a smooth curriculum transition that minimizes loss of credits and duplication of coursework. According to the recent agreements, students will complete the first and second years of coursework at KBOCC and the third and fourth years at NMU, designated as 2+2 programs (denoting two years at each institution). Graduates of KBOCC’s associate degree programs in environmental science and psychology earn 62 credits and 61–65 credits, respectively—all of which are now transferable to NMU. “This agreement provides our students with a seamless pathway to continue their education after KBOCC while remaining close to home and supported by the systems they trust,” said Megan Haataja, Dean of Academic Affairs. The environmental science major provides students with a comprehensive and interdisciplinary educational experience that prepares them for careers in natural and physical science. This program equips students with the interdisciplinary skills to examine, analyze, and understand the complex dynamic interaction of physical, chemical, biological, and social systems. In addition, students focus on using collaboration to resolve complex interdisciplinary environmental problems. “NMU is an important partner for KBOCC,” said Andrew Kozich, Chair of the Department of Environmental Science. “Over the years, several KBOCC environmental science students have continued their education at NMU after graduation. This articulation agreement will make the transfer process quicker and smoother. NMU’s Bachelor of Science degree program in Environmental Science is outstanding, and many of our courses are modeled after theirs. It's a great destination for students to continue their studies in environmental science while staying close to home. We are thankful and look forward to sending NMU more outstanding students!” The psychology major provides a dynamic approach to understanding human behavior and preparing students for diverse occupations and graduate degree programs in psychology through advanced coursework and laboratory experiences. This program is designed to provide a solid foundation in psychological principles, coupled with hands-on experiences and real-world applications that equip students for success. The associate degree program pairs the scientific method with Indigenous research methodologies to ensure students are partaking in research that is relevant and reciprocal to Indigenous communities. “This agreement with Northern Michigan University creates a clear pathway for our students to continue their education, grounded in our belief that tradition shapes our innovation,” said Timothy Raymond, Chair of the Department of Human Studies. The articulation agreements take effect immediately, allowing students to start these degree pathways as early as the Fall 2026 semester. KBOCC now has six established articulation agreements with the following educational institutions: Northern Michigan University
