What Online Learning Looks Like

Flexible. Connected. Grounded in Anishinaabe values.

Our online and blended courses bring KBOCC learning to you—whether you’re at home, at work, or on the road. Expect weekly interaction with your instructor, hands-on projects that connect to community life, and digital spaces that respect our traditions and values.

Online classes are conducted using the learning management system (LMS) Canvas.

Most online courses at KBOCC run for 15 weeks and are offered in one of three delivery formats: asynchronous, synchronous, or blended. All online courses follow the Eastern Standard Time (EST) zone for determining the start and end of each instructional week, synchronous meeting times, assignment and exam submission deadlines, and all official drop and withdrawal dates, as indicated on the Academic Calendar.

SYNCHRONOUS ONLINE (Z)

Students attend live, scheduled class meetings through video conferencing at set times each week. These real-time sessions allow direct interaction with instructors and classmates.

ASYNCHRONOUS ONLINE (O)

Students complete coursework on their own schedule each week, meeting posted deadlines but without required live class sessions. Although flexible, this format still requires frequent and consistent logins to stay current with assignments, discussions, and announcements.

BLENDED ONLINE (CO, ZO, or CZ)

Courses combine asynchronous activities with occasional live online or in-person meetings. The instructor will identify which portions are scheduled and which are self-paced.

Online Learning Readiness

Are you ready to learn online?

Online learning gives you flexibility and freedom, but it also asks for structure. Pursuing higher education through online classes requires students to be independent, motivated, focused, prepared, persistent, organized, and proactive. Before you start, check your readiness in three areas:

TECHNOLOGY COMFORT

Comfort with email, Canvas and KBOCC Student Portal, saving, editing and uploading files in a variety of software (Microsoft, Adobe, Google), troubleshooting basics

TIME MANAGEMENT

5-8 hours per online course per week, based on the credit load

SELF-MOTIVATION

Staying engaged independently. Moust of the learning in online classes is initiated by students when they log into class, read through lectures, class materials, and discussion board postings, compose responses, complete homework assignments, and study for exams.

TAKE THE SELF-READINESS CHECK

This short self-check helps you reflect on your preparedness for online or blended learning. It also helps advisors guide you toward resources or orientation activities that can strengthen your readiness.
